
The goal is not to abandon screens. It is to finish a workday, homework session, or long study block with clear vision, comfortable eyes, and enough energy left for the rest of your life.

Screens ask us to maintain attention and focus at a fixed near or intermediate distance for long periods. We also tend to blink less completely when concentrating. That can destabilize the tear film, allowing vision to fluctuate and the eyes to feel dry, gritty, watery, or tired.
The American Optometric Association’s overview of digital eye strain notes that discomfort often increases with the amount of digital-device use. Screen distance and angle, lighting, glare, prescription needs, focusing ability, eye coordination, and dry eye can all influence symptoms.
This is why simply buying a product labeled for “blue light” may not solve the problem. A lens feature can sometimes improve comfort or manage glare for an individual, but no coating can correct an inaccurate prescription, poor workstation setup, reduced blinking, or an untreated ocular-surface condition.
A headache after several hours of close work may be related to visual demand, posture, stress, dehydration, migraine, sinus issues, or other causes. When headaches reliably appear during computer work, studying, or reading, a comprehensive eye exam can help determine whether the prescription, focusing system, eye coordination, or ocular surface may be contributing.
If text fades in and out of focus, you may be dealing with tear-film instability, dry eye, contact-lens deposits, an outdated prescription, or focusing fatigue. Blinking temporarily clears the blur when the tear film is part of the problem; other causes may not improve as quickly.
After sustained near work, some people notice a delay when looking from a laptop to a distant clock, television, classroom board, or road sign. The focusing system must relax and change its effort. Persistent or pronounced difficulty deserves evaluation rather than being dismissed as “just screens.”
Watery eyes can still be dry. When the tear film becomes unstable, the surface of the eye may trigger reflex tearing that feels excessive but does not necessarily provide lasting lubrication. HVAC airflow, ceiling fans, low humidity, allergies, eyelid-gland dysfunction, and contact lenses can add to the problem.
Increasing the font size is a sensible accessibility tool. Constantly leaning toward the screen, however, can also signal that the working distance does not match your prescription or that the display is simply too small or poorly positioned for the task. Squinting may temporarily sharpen blur while adding facial and muscular tension.
Vision and posture are closely linked. If you tilt your chin, raise your head to see through the wrong portion of a progressive lens, or lean toward a low laptop screen, the discomfort may appear in your neck before you think of your eyes. A prescription can be optically accurate and still be poorly matched to the physical setup.
Long screen sessions, reduced blinking, indoor airflow, seasonal allergies, and tear-film changes can make contact lenses feel dry or cause vision to fluctuate. Switching brands without evaluating lens fit, wear time, the eyelids, and the ocular surface may miss the real cause.
Every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This gives the focusing system a brief change in demand and interrupts prolonged staring.
The rule is a helpful starting habit, but it will not correct an outdated prescription, treat dry eye, or repair a poor workstation. Pair it with the following practical steps.
Many desktop monitors feel comfortable at roughly an arm’s length, but body size, screen size, font, task, and prescription all matter. Avoid placing the screen so far away that you lean forward or so close that the eyes must sustain unnecessary focusing effort.
A modest downward gaze can support a more natural head position and may reduce exposed ocular surface compared with looking upward. Laptop users often benefit from raising the device and using a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen and hands do not compete for the same ideal height.
Make the content comfortably readable at the intended distance. High contrast and appropriate brightness are generally more useful than forcing the eyes to decipher small, faint text.
Position screens perpendicular to bright windows when possible. Adjust blinds, task lighting, and display brightness so the screen does not feel like a light source floating in a dark room. An anti-reflective lens treatment may help selected patients, but environmental changes remain important.
Briefly close the eyes and complete a full blink several times during breaks. If symptoms persist, an eye examination can determine whether dry eye, allergies, eyelid inflammation, meibomian-gland dysfunction, or contact-lens factors require more specific care.
Looking away from a computer only to scroll on a phone does not meaningfully change the visual demand. Stand, look through a window, refill water, walk the hallway, or step outside.
Computer glasses are not one standard product. They are prescription lenses designed around a person’s actual working distances and visual tasks.
An accountant using two large monitors may need something different from a graphic designer, physician, remote consultant, gamer, or student moving between a laptop and classroom board. Options can include:
A dedicated intermediate or near prescription
An occupational progressive design with a wider computer zone
A small prescription adjustment for sustained near work
Anti-reflective treatment to reduce distracting reflections
Updated everyday glasses when the main problem is an outdated prescription

For daytime comfort, start with the fundamentals: the correct prescription, readable text, appropriate lighting, regular breaks, blinking, and ocular-surface care when needed.
Children may not use the phrase “eye strain.” Parents may instead notice rubbing, headaches, short attention during homework, moving closer to a device, or avoiding reading after a screen-heavy school day.

Matching device size to the task
Keeping screens out of laps and extremely close viewing distances
Encouraging regular distance breaks
Building outdoor time into the day when possible
Watching for squinting or persistent blur at the classroom board
Scheduling a comprehensive eye exam when symptoms or prescription changes appear

For screen-associated dryness, selected patients may benefit from preservative-free lubrication or other targeted care. Products such as OPTASE Intense Dry Eye preservative-free drops may be considered when appropriate, but no drop is the right answer for every patient and persistent symptoms should be evaluated.
Digital eye strain usually develops gradually. Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, significant redness, new light sensitivity, a curtain or shadow in vision, new flashes and floaters, or a neurologic symptom such as weakness or difficulty speaking should not be attributed to screen time. Seek prompt medical evaluation.
