If you cannot safely drive, work or care for your family without glasses, a current backup is practical—not indulgent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises drivers to wear a current prescription and not rely on an outdated pair if glasses are lost or broken.

A backup can be especially useful for high prescriptions, children, travelers and contact-lens wearers. It should be verified and fitted like real eyewear, not treated as a disposable afterthought. For contact-lens patients, glasses also provide an essential option when eyes are red, irritated or need a break from lenses.

Job 2: Computer or Task-Specific Vision

An everyday progressive may prioritize movement among distance, dashboard and near vision. A dedicated office lens can instead devote more usable area to the laptop, multiple monitors, documents and across-the-room working distance.
