What Is Childhood Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry. It often begins during the school years and can progress as a child’s eye grows longer than expected.

Clearer vision is only part of the concern. Greater amounts of myopia are associated with a higher lifetime risk of retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts. No treatment eliminates those risks, but slowing progression may help reduce the amount of myopia a child ultimately develops.

From my perspective as an eye doctor, the goal is not to frighten families or promise that a prescription will stop changing. It is to identify children at meaningful risk, measure progression carefully, and intervene when the expected benefits justify treatment.

What Are Essilor Stellest Lenses?

Stellest lenses are prescription eyeglass lenses developed for children with myopia. The center provides the child’s distance prescription. The surrounding area contains a pattern of highly aspherical lenslets that creates a controlled myopic defocus signal while the child looks through the lens.

This design has two purposes:

• Correct the child’s current nearsighted prescription for clear everyday vision.

• Help slow further prescription progression and axial elongation.

They resemble ordinary eyeglasses during normal wear. Precise measurements, an appropriate pediatric frame, and consistent positioning are essential because the treatment design must remain properly aligned with the child’s eyes.

FDA Authorization and Who May Qualify

The FDA authorized Stellest lenses for correcting myopia, with or without astigmatism, and slowing its progression in children with healthy eyes who are ages 6 through 12 when treatment begins. The authorized prescription range is a spherical equivalent of -0.75 D through -4.50 D, with up to 1.50 D of astigmatism.

The FDA-reviewed two-year clinical study found an average 71% reduction in myopia progression and 53% reduction in axial elongation compared with conventional single-vision lenses. These are group averages, not guarantees for an individual child. Stellest lenses do not reverse existing myopia or ensure that a prescription will never change.

Children and teenagers outside the FDA-authorized initiation criteria may still deserve a comprehensive myopia evaluation. Their treatment discussion simply needs to consider other options and clearly distinguish general myopia-management candidacy from this product’s specific indication.

Which Children Should Be Evaluated Early?

A dedicated myopia-management consultation may be especially valuable when a child:

• Has a prescription that has increased between examinations.

• Developed myopia at a young age.

• Has one or two myopic parents.

• Spends substantial time on screens, reading, studying, or other close work.

• Has limited outdoor time.

• Has a family history of high myopia, retinal holes, retinal tears, retinal detachment, or myopic degeneration.

• Is not ready for contact lenses or prefers an eyeglass-based approach.

Family history and lifestyle do not determine the treatment by themselves. They help us understand risk in combination with age, prescription history, eye health, and eye-growth measurements.

Why Axial Length Matters

Axial length is the measurement from the front to the back of the eye. Because childhood myopia is commonly associated with excessive elongation, axial length can reveal eye growth that a glasses prescription alone may not fully describe.

Comprehensive Eye Exam vs. Myopia Management Consultation

A comprehensive eye exam evaluates the child’s vision, prescription, focusing and eye-teaming abilities, and overall eye health.

A dedicated myopia-management consultation is a separate, treatment-focused visit. Depending on the child, it may include:

• Review of past prescriptions and progression.

• Axial-length measurement with the Topcon MYAH.

• Corneal topography when clinically useful.

• Slit-lamp and ocular-health evaluation.

• Family-history and lifestyle assessment.

• Discussion of screen habits, near work, and outdoor time.

• Comparison of Stellest with other appropriate treatments.

• An individualized monitoring and follow-up plan.

Wearing and Follow-Up

Consistent wear matters. Stellest labeling recommends at least 10 hours per day, six days per week. For most children, that means wearing the glasses throughout school and during most waking activities.

Follow-up frequency is individualized. Visits may assess visual comfort, prescription, frame alignment, wearing habits, eye health, and axial-length change. A frame that slips, tilts, or becomes loose should be professionally adjusted rather than ignored.

Most children adapt well, although blur, halos, headache, or other visual symptoms can occur. Persistent symptoms should be reported so we can check the prescription, fit, measurements, and ocular health.
